Summary:
This is an entry level position which requires semi-skilled work with basic laboratory operations, field and technical work in a NELAP Certified Laboratory for the analysis of water and wastewater samples.
A significant amount of field sampling and FOG inspecting should be expected.
Operates equipment in connection with tasks assigned.
Work requires customer contact.
Investigates and remediates water quality issues, does related work as required.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Chemist.
Job Description:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Performs routine field sampling and analysis under the general direction of the Chief Environmental Chemist.
Performs technical work in a NELAP Certified Laboratory.
Sets up and adjusts laboratory apparatus.
Assists in the preparation of reagents for bacteriological and chemical analysis.
Conducts sampling and analyses of drinking water, wastewater, sludge, industrial pretreatment and groundwater.
Able to perform competent related computer skills.
Cleans and sterilizes laboratory apparatus and glassware.
Assists in maintaining laboratory inventory of chemicals, reagents and glassware.
Assists in the preparation of reports and performs miscellaneous functions.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Associates or Bachelor's from an accredited college or university with a major in Chemistry, Biology or Environmental Science or related field is required.
An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified or get certified within one (1) year of hire.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
Ability to read and write neatly.
Ability to deal with the general public in a professional, courteous manner.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.
Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, work orders, operation guides, legal documents, instructions, letters, memos, journals, and maps.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Good physical condition is essential.
Ability to accept and understand directions.
Knowledge of laboratory practices concerning mixing of chemicals and reagents, preparation of stock solutions, and cleaning of glassware and equipment.
Skill in the use of laboratory equipment such as analytical balances, microscopes, and autoclaves.
Knowledge of laboratory function and quality assurance tasks on media, equipment, and supplies.
Knowledge of the City of DeLand area (streets, roads, landmarks, etc.
) is preferred.
Ability to learn methods and practices of modern water and wastewater treatment.
Ability to learn standard operating procedures as they relate to laboratory, field and treatment facility operations.
Ability to teach other employees knowledge and skills to improve their work performance.
Ability to fill out reports and work orders with good penmanship.
Ability to work independently in a diligent manner.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:
This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving.
The employee will work outside in various weather conditions.
Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in water and may handle chemicals.
